Carpeted stairs are generally safer and quieter than marble or wooden stairs.
Do you need underlay for stairs? Underlay is not just for comfort, it also absorbs the shock from foot traffic. As the stairs usually receives the highest foot traffic, underlay is essential for this area.
But in some cases and with certain types of carpet you may decide against underlay.

Loop pile carpets (like Berber carpets) are very hard-wearing and will take a lot of traffic without going flat. Twist pile carpets are also a good choice, being very durable because of how the yarn is cut and tightly twisted.
